Canada's long-rumoured interest in joining the Eurovision Song Contest is once again making headlines, with growing discussion about whether the country could make its debut as early as 2027.

Although Eurovision is traditionally associated with Europe, participation is determined by membership in the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) rather than geography alone. This is how Australia was able to become a regular competitor after first appearing in 2015. Canada's public broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada, holds associate membership status, meaning an application would at least be possible under Eurovision's rules. Recent comments from Eurovision director Martin Green have fuelled speculation. He suggested that any nation willing to embrace the spirit and values of the contest would be welcomed into discussions, although he stressed that Canada has not yet formally applied to participate.

Interest in Eurovision has been growing steadily across Canada in recent years. The country already has strong links to the competition through artists such as Céline Dion, who famously won Eurovision for Switzerland in 1988, and La Zarra, who represented France in 2023. These connections have helped maintain Canadian interest in the event despite the country never competing under its own flag.

Behind the scenes, Canadian officials have reportedly explored the possibility of entering the contest, viewing it as an opportunity to showcase Canadian culture, music and talent on one of the world's biggest entertainment stages. Representatives from CBC have also attended Eurovision events as observers, a move many fans see as a sign that discussions are becoming more serious.

However, joining Eurovision is not simply a matter of asking for a place. Experts note that Australia spent years building relationships with the EBU and demonstrating how its participation could benefit the contest before being granted entry. Canada would likely need to present a strong business and broadcasting case of its own.

For Eurovision organisers, a Canadian debut could open the door to millions of new viewers across North America and attract additional commercial opportunities. Supporters argue that Canada's multicultural music scene would add another exciting dimension to the competition.

At this stage, no final decision has been announced. But with discussions continuing and interest growing on both sides of the Atlantic, the prospect of seeing a maple leaf on the Eurovision scoreboard in 2027 no longer seems impossible.

For now, Eurovision fans will be watching closely to see whether Canada becomes the next country to take its place on Europe's biggest music stage.
